Randall/NASA Model #5-6 inch, CAMP & TRAIL Model-6 inch
The story behind the Randall/NASA knife project.

After the Challenger disaster, NASA immediately began bunker re-builds on both Launch Pad #39-A as well as #39-B. All-new electrical as well as electronic equipment and hardwire was needed and nothing that was in those complexes was used or re-used.
Perry Woodson Miller, Owner of Woodson & Associates, received the contract (issued after silent bid submission) to do the work. NASA has, does and probably always “will” require union electrical contractors to perform all of their work. Perry’s shop was, indeed, just such a shop and had done various projects for NASA, prior to this one. Woodsman & Assoc. was located in Mims, Fl., just 5 miles north of the Cape.
Perry Miller was also: President of the NCKA (National Knife Collectors Association), President of the NKM (National Knife Museum) , Randall Made Knives “Official Authenticator”…and my best friend. The 2 of us traveled about the country, attending various shows together, like The Blade Show (Georgia), The Spirit of Steel Show (Texas), The Parker Cutlery Shows (Tennessee) as well of dozens of shows In Oklahoma and Florida.
We lost Perry a decade ago this past July 29th, 2014. Like a lot of friends of mine, Perry died, waiting for a bed at The V.A.! I miss him every day and always will. I cannot (nor “would” not) tell the story of the NASA knife projects without telling his first.
About the Randall/NASA project:
Perry called within a couple of days from the beginning of the demolition of both #39A & #39B, starting with “A”. He told me that there were a lot of insulators, races (non-metal conduit), circuit boards and back-up materials, spanning decades, that was to be headed for the landfill. I asked him if any of it could be salvaged to make knife handles. Perry’s reply was: “Oh Yeah”!
We (mostly him) started the process to obtain permission to use this salvaged material and have NASA-approved & official logos and artwork used in recognition of this worthwhile project. We received a resounding “Yes” and the knife project was set in motion. I think, to date, several hundred knives have, either been completed…or will be.
I will list all of the information about this particular RMK knife below...and thanks for suffering through my 'Novela'!
