Cattaraugus Model 225Q
As promised, I am listing a couple of 'OTHER' items picked up in Tulsa at the show. How about this? Cattaraugus Model 225Q, Mfg. from 1942-44! A truly lovely old war horse! I hope you agree.
Made in Cattaraugus County, New York (Little Valley was the town)...this blood-grooved example is spectacular. I have no way of knowing this knife's past. It was either professionally re-finished or nicely polished in original condition to start with...who knows??
Here's a little bit about the knife. The 'Q' denotation was for 'Quartermaster' who's department was charged for the ordering of these knives. Legend has it the knurled pommel was made for Quartermasters to pound in nails on wooden crates...(I doubt that...but it's just part of the 'legend').
All made had blood grooves. The blade measures almost an exact 6 inches in length and is 5mm (1/5th of an inch) in blade thickness. The edge is absolutely stellar and perfect...sharp-to-the-bone!! The handle is leather and steel pommel is 3-piece, being kept in place by 2 rivets. An enormous full, exposed tang is clearly seen visible in the pommel.
The leather sheath is stitched and additionally secured with 8 rivets. The snap is sharp & clean and works perfectly. Several thoughts can be debated on the reason for a weak-side (or left hand) carry sheath. One is, of course the obvious, to accommodate a right (strong) side carry of a 1911. The other, according to several Marines, is that they were taught (Same as Bo Randall taught) an inverted hand hold for combat fighting (edge up, if you will). This sheath would justify that usage as well.
Whatever this particular war horse's story is will probably always go unknown...but it's a helluva' piece, of that there is no denying. I hope you enjoy looking at it, if not owning it.
