Randall Model #17-5 1/2 inch, ASTRO!
Been around a good many decades now, the Astro was designed by Bo Randall & Gordon Cooper, originally for the Mercury Mission! Back in those days, of course, all landings were 'water touchdowns', which sounds just fine but if the capsule re-entered the Earth's atmosphere at a fraction of a degree off, those water touchdowns could wind up God knows where!
Besides a S&W Air Crewman, gold coins, etc. all Astronauts carried a Randall Model #17, strapped to their pack...'JUST-IN-CASE'! The scales were easily removed with a small, flat screwdriver which was attached by a hole in the driver with the knife's wrist thong passed through it. Inside the handle scales was a small cutout of the tang which could house optional equipment, i.e. monofilament fishing line and small hooks, water purifications tablets, etc.
The blade design, although criticized today by the novice, was designed to be safely used, even with the large space gloves that the Astronauts wore! Great design, great historical significance and at last year's price to boot!
The double hilt is the only one in the Randall lineup made of stainless steel which requires a special solder and temperature to affix!
